A/N: i was going through my wips the other day and decided to give this one a new life. it's been sitting in my drafts since january and i've been trying to ease myself back into posting things that other people can see :,) and hyunjae saying he thinks of sunwoo "very, very, very dearly" continues to live in my head rent-free, so. here it is.

“Have you ever thought of telling Hyunjae hyung how you feel?”
Sunwoo laughs. It comes out a lot more bitter than he intended, filling the studio. “I would never.”
Eric gives him a look. “It’s been years, dude.”
“So?” He takes a piece of Maltesers from the bucket and throws it at Eric’s face. Eric barely swats it away. “I can handle a few years more.”
“You can’t.”
“I can.” Sunwoo crosses his arms in front of his chest and leans back in his seat. “It’s fine. It doesn’t matter.”
Eric sighs. He drags a hand down his face. “Okay. Whatever floats your boat, man.”
(Sunwoo knows he wants to say more; Eric always does, Eric and his big heart always looking out for him because despite what Sunwoo says, it really does matter. But he doesn’t push, at least not this time.)
“So,” Sunwoo says. He plucks the pencil wedged between the table and the wall and taps it on his notebook cover. “Are you still helping me with the rap?”

Sunwoo swaddles himself in a blanket, one hand sticking out to keep his phone a watchable distance from his face.
Their TO.MATE video came out earlier that day, drawing Road to Kingdom close to an end. Staff called it a way for them to ‘be each other’s strength’, a sequence of short video messages that also allowed the fans a glimpse of their struggle throughout the whole Mnet survival show ordeal. There was no script to read from, no heads up to rehearse what they could say. Sunwoo watches each member relay a message to the next, bare-faced, pulling from the vulnerabilities they usually keep hidden and laying it out for everyone to see.
The video transitions from Eric to Hyunjae, the glitch effect cutting into Hyunjae blinking, silver bangs over his eyes. “Sunwoo-ya,” he starts. “Um… whenever we perform on stage together, I realize how grateful I am to have you as a member of THE BOYZ...”
Sunwoo holds his breath as Hyunjae talks. He isn’t used to seeing Hyunjae like this, the group even going as far as calling him the least emotional member, so this admission of admiration and gratefulness feels more like an honor than anything. Like a secret, even.
“I know I’ve always been a jokester to you,” Hyunjae continues, fiddling with his pinky. “But I think of you very, very, very dearly...”
(Tomorrow, Sunwoo will try to confess. Hyunjae’s small TO.MATE speech isn’t by any means a declaration of love, but Sunwoo feels the need to respond in kind, more for his own peace of mind than anything else.
It's been years.
