Sunwoo is lying prone on the couch watching a drama he doesn’t know the name of when Jaehyun comes home. He manages to peel his cheek off the seat enough to watch Jaehyun toe his shoes off.

“You’re home early,” he says. “What happened to your date?”

“What?” Jaehyun says. He straightens up, one hand still holding a shoe. “Oh, the one I just went to? It was fine.”

“That’s not what people who come home early from a date say.”

Jaehyun hums, noncommittal, and rounds the couch to sit by Sunwoo’s head. There’s a funny stain on his jeans that Sunwoo keeps from pointing out.

“So,” Sunwoo says. He sits up and hugs his knees to his chest. “Was it a good date?”

“I told you, it was fine.”

It is not fine if Jaehyun refuses to talk about it like this. Every time something goes well Jaehyun is the first to speak up about it, even if it isn’t about him.

“OK,” Sunwoo says. He shifts away from Jaehyun to give him some space. He wants to know what happened but it isn’t his place to pry. “Let me know when you want to talk about it.”

They sit like that for a while, silently watching one of the characters on TV make budae jjigae while drunk, spilling the soup on their shirt.

Jaehyun’s sigh holds over the nagging of another character. “There was no date.”

“What?”

“I didn’t—” Jaehyun runs a hand down his face. “I didn’t go on a date. I hung out with Younghoon and we ate ice cream straight from the tub and I cried about my feelings.”

Sunwoo wants to laugh. “Feelings? You like somebody?”

“Yes,” Jaehyun says, pained. “I do.”

“Okay. Why are you telling me this?”

“Because it’s you.”

That can’t be real. Now Sunwoo actually laughs. “Are you serious?”

Jaehyun frowns. “If I wasn’t serious I wouldn’t be saying it like this.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah. Oh.”

(The abrupt confession was definitely not part of Sunwoo’s list of Possible Things To Happen Today, or even at all, because all he’s ever been to Jaehyun is a nuisance and never someone to even consider in a romantic manner. And even if he was, Jaehyun is out of his league.

And yet.

And yet.

This allows Sunwoo to entertain possibilities he didn’t know existed. Jaehyun is objectively wet dream material—not that Sunwoo is speaking from experience, mind you—so he’d be lying if he said this didn’t give him an ego boost of some kind. It makes him giddy. He allows love-adjacent feelings to seep through his chest.)

“You don’t have to say anything,” Jaehyun says. “It’s fine. Nothing has to change, I just thought I’d let you know.”

It is not fine if Jaehyun keeps having to insist that it is. Despite how unexpected it is, Sunwoo welcomes it. He can’t deny that a small crush has been forming on his end after all the time they’ve spent living together. Jaehyun isn’t alone in this. Sunwoo knows trying wouldn’t hurt.

“But what if I want things to change?”

“What?”

“I want us to try. Like, being more than friends. Dating. That stuff.”

Jaehyun tips his head back on the sofa and sighs. “We don’t have to. You don’t have to.”

“I want to.” Sunwoo scoots closer, placing a light touch on Jaehyun’s wrist. “I care about you and I’ve always had some sort of feelings for you, I just couldn’t figure out what they were. Hyung, I want to try.”

Jaehyun looks at him, eyes searching his face in equal parts hope and fear. Sunwoo gives him a small smile and hopes it’s as reassuring as he wants it to be.

“OK,” Jaehyun says. He finally returns Sunwoo’s smile. “We can try.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“Good,” Sunwoo says, settling back into the couch. “Because there’s this chicken place I’ve been meaning to try but I don’t have anyone to go with.”

“You’re so annoying,” Jaehyun says, fond. “But sure, we’ll go together.”

Sunwoo grins and leans his head on Jaehyun’s shoulder. Jaehyun links their arms together and Sunwoo lets himself think that maybe, this would work out.

Trying definitely wouldn’t hurt.
