1. a movie ticket,
Kevin bailing on their hangout last minute was the last thing Eric wanted to happen. There had been an emergency faculty meeting at work, leaving Eric to fend for himself.
kevin
ill make it up to u i swear
free ramyeon for a month!!! pinky promise
ill ask younghoon hyung if he can still make it
There isn’t much to defend himself from, if he’s being honest. Younghoon is harmless but Eric has only hung out with him a total of one time, and it was also with Kevin. Eric doesn’t know how to hang out with him one-on-one.
(Also, Younghoon is very pretty. Eric developed a small crush on him right off the bat and ran his mouth more than is typical of him. Thankfully, Kevin didn’t point it out until they dropped Younghoon off near his dorm.
“Younghoon hyung, huh?”
“Shut up.”
“It’s cute! He’s single, by the way.”
“Don’t say that.”
“What?”
“He’s out of my league.”
“No you’re not. I think he’ll like you just fine.”)
The Carnelian boasts an endless rotation of old indie films and foreign classics. It isn’t Eric’s first choice for a hangout spot, but, well. It wasn’t his choice in the first place. Kevin invited him and then invited Younghoon. He doesn’t even know what movie they’re going to be seeing. Should he try and look it up now? There might not be enough signal to use data. Will Younghoon try to ask him about it? Maybe, but he can always laugh it off when he says he doesn’t know. God, what if Younghoon thinks—
“Eric, hi.”
Eric whirls around and decidedly does not have a heart attack. “Hi, hyung.”
So far so good.
“Am I late? Is Kevin here? Wait, I think he texted earlier—” Younghoon looks through his phone. He frowns when he sees Kevin’s text but he doesn’t look as disappointed as Eric expected. “Ah. So it’s just us then?”
“Yup,” Eric says, rocking back on his heels. “Do you, um, want to go inside?”
“Sure!” Younghoon says, pocketing his phone. “Let’s buy snacks. I can pay for our drinks if you want.”
“Oh, no, it’s fine, I can—”
“Eric, it’s fine. I swear.” Younghoon opens the door for him. “I do this with Kevin all the time.”
“OK, OK. As long as I get to pay for the popcorn.”
“Deal.”

kevin

but it went well right
eric
yeah it was nice
kevin
you’re welcome <3
2. a receipt for chicken,
Eric is surprised to find out that Younghoon is the type to text first.
He isn’t trying to be judgy but with Younghoon’s face and the not-so-subtle line of suitors (people who anonymously post about him on the university confessions Facebook page), Younghoon looks like the type to play hard to get.
Despite his initial reservations, a text and a carefully-planned hangout finds Eric crammed in a small table at a hole-in-the-wall chicken place, fingers sticky with chicken grease.
Younghoon watches him stack their plates, cups, and gloves cleanly on the tabletop. Eric isn’t trying to impress; he’s a tidy person, always has been, but the way Younghoon looks at him with slight wonder makes him want to show off, just a little bit.
(By cleaning? Get a grip, Eric Youngjae Sohn.)
“You’re a really neat person,” Younghoon says when he’s stacked up the last of the cups. “Like, literally.”
“...Sorry?”
“It’s not bad! It’s really cute, actually.”
“Oh. Thank you.”
Younghoon stands and drops the tissue he was using on the little tower Eric created. “I’ll just wash up then we can go, ‘kay?”
3. an unopened condom,
“Eric?”
“Hm?”
“Why…” Sunwoo clears his throat. “Why is there a condom on the kitchen counter?”
“Shit, sorry,” Eric says. He stands up from his desk to snatch the condom away. He winces as he tosses it somewhere on his bed, making a mental note to tuck it somewhere safe later. (Not that he’ll ever need it, just that he doesn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea when they come over.) “I was with Younghoon hyung—”
“Ew, TMI.”
“Not like that! Anyway,” Eric continues. He makes himself comfortable at his desk again. “One of the organizations on campus was giving away free condoms. I was too busy talking to Younghoon hyung, I took one without thinking.”
“Right.”
“It’s true!”
“Whatever you say,” Sunwoo sing-songs as he dumps his things on his desk, then flops chest-first on his bed. “I’m gonna take a nap. Wake me up in ten minutes?”
“Sure.”
“Cool. Thanks.”
4. a thank-you note,
Eric has barely opened the door to their dorm room when Sunwoo says, “Your scientific calculator is on the kitchen counter.”
He doesn’t even bother gracing Eric with a look, eyes glued to his laptop screen as he types away sitting cross-legged on the couch.
“What?”
“Younghoon hyung dropped by. He told me he borrowed your sci cal a few days ago and he just had time to give it back.”
“Oh. Thanks.”
“No problem.”
Eric takes it off the counter and drops his bag by the foot of his desk. Younghoon didn’t bother sliding the cover back on, but Eric figures it’s fine. Younghoon isn’t the type to be careless about his things, much less other people’s. He removes the cover from the back when he sees the note.
hi eric!!! ♡
thanks for lending this to me~ i really appreciate it~
such a lifesaver! let’s hang out again soon ^_^
- younghoon
Eric makes sure his back is facing Sunwoo when he allows himself a smile, unbidden. Younghoon is so cute. Eric likes him so much. He peels the sticky note off the plastic and sticks it on the inside of his desk shelf, where it can sit undisturbed. (No one needs to know that he can and will use it as study motivation.) When he sits down, he sends Younghoon a quick thank-you text before he forgets. Younghoon replies almost instantly.
younghoonie hyung
it’s no problem!
seriously you were the one to lend it to me anyway ㅎ
hope it didn’t take too long
eric
no you’re good!!!
but we really should hang out soon lol
younghoonie hyung
after finals plz ㅠ
i miss hanging out with you
eric
sure! just let me know, hyung
i miss hanging out with you too
can’t wait ;)
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck. Why did he send a winky face? Now Younghoon is going to think he’s creepy and he’ll have to fake his death and change his name and move somewhere else—
younghoonie hyung
see you!! ;)
The squeal he makes isn’t disruptive but he still deserves the pen Sunwoo lobs at his head.
“Please shut up.”
He rubs at the spot the pen hit and locks his phone.
5. and a cup of iced chocolate
For some odd reason, Younghoon is outside his classroom. Eric doesn’t want to assume that he’s here for him, so he says, “Hyung, hi! Are you here to talk to Juyeon hyung? I can tell him, he’s just talking to the professor.”
“Oh, no, it’s fine. I wanted to talk to you, actually.” Younghoon hands him a cup, smiling. “I brought you iced chocolate.”
“Oh.” A beat. “Thank you,” he says, and takes the cup. Younghoon shoves his hands in his coat pockets.
(Eric doesn’t want to write it off as odd, but ever since their chicken hangout, Younghoon has taken to hugging his arm whenever they walk together. Literally just taking his whole arm and clinging on like it matters so much.
Younghoon must have his reasons now, but Eric still finds himself missing his warmth.)
“Where do you want to…?” Eric asks, giving the cup a little squeeze out of nerves.
“Right. We’ll just, uh, walk. I guess,” Younghoon says, then turns on his heel so abruptly it takes Eric a few moments to register the fact that he’s walking away. Eric follows, even though he’s not actually sure where they’re going and for all he knows, Younghoon could be doing something sketchy. He’s already bribed Eric with iced chocolate.
Or, he thinks, maybe Younghoon just wants to take a walk. They haven’t seen each other in a week or so, their finals schedules clashing so much the windows of time they were both free were too short to meet up.
However: “Hyung, are you OK? You haven’t said anything. What do you need to talk to me about?”
“Sorry. Uh, hold on.” Then Younghoon speedwalks to the nearest bench that isn’t in people’s immediate line of sight. Eric manages to anticipate his movements this time and speedwalks after him. Younghoon sighs when he sits on the bench and smiles up at Eric, apologetic.
Eric sits beside him, leaving a few inches of space between them just to be sure. It’s scary and confusing enough that Younghoon wants to talk to him. He doesn’t know what he did—or didn’t do, even—and Younghoon has never gotten this nervous around him. He chews at the straw of his drink.
“So,” Younghoon says. “Um.”
“Did I do something wrong?”
“No! No,” Younghoon lets out a breath. “I just, uh. Can you—” he makes a curving gesture with his hands. “Can you turn around?”
“What?”
“Please.”
“O...OK.”
Eric turns and makes sure he isn’t facing the other way in an awkward position. He cradles his iced chocolate in both hands to keep it from spilling over. Behind him, Younghoon exhales and clears his throat.
“I really,” Younghoon begins. “Hah. Sorry. I can do this, I promise.”
Do what, Eric wants to ask, but Younghoon keeps talking.
“I really, really like you.”
Eric’s heart jumps in his throat and he almost turns around in shock. He can’t feel his stomach anymore.
(Maybe it’s for the best that they aren’t talking face to face. Eric doesn’t think he can look at any part of Younghoon’s face right now.)
“When we hung out the first time, I thought you were cute. And I kept wanting to see you, so I kept asking you to hang out with me. But I didn’t really realize I liked you until finals? And when you got out of class a while ago I thought, wow, I want to ki—uh. Sorry. I don’t think I should say that. But I really do like you.” Younghoon pauses. “You can turn around now.”
Eric cannot sit properly and process Younghoon’s words at the same time. It’s like his insides are going to come out of his butt if he isn’t careful. He changes his sitting position about three times before he tucks his legs in and lets the metal of the bench dig into his ankles, setting his iced chocolate between his legs.
“I don’t know what to say,” Eric says, which is the wrong thing to say because Younghoon’s face scrunches up in disappointment. Shit, okay, backtrack—
“I don’t know what to say because I like you too,” Eric says as carefully as he can so Younghoon doesn’t misunderstand. “Like, I really do. I also thought you were cute but I didn’t think I stood a chance because I also go through the university confessions page more often than I should—”
“Chismosavirus.”
“What?”
“It’s a, it’s a term Chanhee taught me. It means you like gossip. Or something.”
“Yeah, there’s a lot of shit going on in the confessions page, it’s actually so—hey, don’t change the subject! I’m confessing!”
“Sorry,” Younghoon says, not looking the least bit sorry. He’s so cute.
Eric huffs. “Anyway. I really do like you.”
“Good,” Younghoon says. He closes the few-inch gap between them and puts his hand on Eric’s thigh. “That’s good. Can I kiss you?”
“Yes. Please.”
It’s only a brief press of lips, but Younghoon smiles into the kiss. Eric also finds himself smiling even as Younghoon pulls away.
“You taste like chocolate,” Younghoon says.
“At least I’m sweet.”
“You’re sweet even without the chocolate.” Eric rolls his eyes. “It’s true!”
“You’re lucky I like you.”
Younghoon beams and kisses his nose in response.
